The Centre

Herbal Education Resource Centre was established in 1985 (No. 2026), as an herbal educational resource centre and clinic, under Herbal Ltd., to support those who wished to study and apply natural traditional treatments, in an era of medical influences in the 1970’s – 80s’s that dominated our health system.  The origin of the resource centre was based on herbal gardens, with growing and teaching. The gardens were open to the public and those interested in learning about the basics of herbal teas and remedies.  Due to increasing demand, this expanded quickly into providing those wanting to gain an educational status in order to dispense herbs, a  requirement under the changing Medicines Act. So move over meds, herbalism is becoming the stronger choice in preventative healthcare. Due to an increasing demand, the centre’s director, as a qualified teacher and tohungā, launched the herbal education centre’s  indigenous & traditional educational facility by providing affordable certified correspondence courses for those wanting to expand their holistic hinengaro, tinana & wairua – mind, body & spirit ancestral knowledge of nature.

Since 1986, the herbal educational centre has provided a wide range of correspondence courses, ranging from an entry level study, right through to a Masters Degree in Traditional Herbalism. The Centre offers Courses in Basic Natural Healthcare, Basic Nutritional Healthcare, three levels of Traditional Herbalism (Certificate, Diploma and Master’s Degree) and a recent addition, Homeopathic Healthcare. These are all correspondence Courses, for those interested in obtaining certification in traditional use.
